Geoffrey Pleyers

Geoffrey Pleyers is FNRS researcher and professor at the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium) where he co-chair the Group of Latin American Studies (GRIAL) and chair the research group “SMAG – Social Movements in the Global Age”. He is the vice-president for research of the International Sociological Association (ISA) and the president of the IV World Forum of Sociology that will take place in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in July 2020. Between 2014 and 2018, he was the past president of ISA Research Committee 47 “Social movements” Geoffrey Pleyers holds a PhD in sociology from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris, 2006) and chairs the research program “Social movements in the global age” at the University of Louvain and at the Collège d’Etudes Mondiales in Paris. He is a regular visiting professor at the National University of Mexico as well as in Brazilian, Chilian and Colombian universities. His research focuses on social movements, youth activism, ecology, critical consumption, democracy and globalization. He authored over 100 scholar articles or book chapters and edited 15 books or journal special issues, most of which focus on social movements in Latin America. His main books are “Alter-Globalization. Becoming Actors in the Global Age” (Cambridge, Polity, 2011) and “Movimientos sociales en el siglo XXI” (Buenos Aires CLACSO, 2018).
